A group of 18 spent the Day at Knole on 15th October. The first part of the morning was a tour around the outside of the building with an expert guide telling us about the history of the buildings and the powerful people who built it, extended it and lived in it, pointing out many interesting features. The tour ended in the conservation studio we were told a little about the work being undertaken including restoring picture frames (2 for Buckingham Palace.) Vita Sackville-Wests mother liked to make do and mend so she cut up several tapestries to cover chair seats, put frills on stools etc, many of these now need cleaning  – a very delicate task of course. Our tour was called From Past to Present – most apt for what it covered.

After that most of us opted for lunch before taking a self-guided tour of the 15 newly refurbished showrooms – all with very knowledgeable guides in them to help us on our way round.

An excellent day out and we were so lucky with the weather. Thank you to Helen and Lynne for organising it.
