The Arts Society Gravesend was formed 30 years ago.

We are part of a national network - The Arts Society -  and headquarters based in London support the groups in a huge variety of ways. 

We aim to inform and inspire our members with high quality lectures from experts in their chosen field and try to offer as wide a range of subjects as we can. We plan our lectures one year in advance and members are encouraged to make suggestions if they have any particular interests. All the lectures are graded and given a rating by members which is fed back to HQ in order to maintain high standards. 

About the area

Gravesend and its surrounding districts have many historic buildings and areas of cultural interest, which contribute greatly to the character and uniqueness of the area. Gravesham Borough Council has won many national awards for its regeneration and restoration programmes such as the town pier (the last remaining cast iron pier in the world) the Berkley Crescent colonnades and the Heritage Quarter.

St Georges Church in the centre of Gravesend is the place where Princess Pocahontas is buried. Gravesend also has a rich and varied Architectural Heritage. Many well known personalities have links with the area including Daniel Defoe, Dick Whittington and Charles Dickens.

The many villages around Gravesend all have areas of interest, old buildings and houses, beautiful countryside and in the case of Meopham a windmill. It was built in 1801 reputedly from old ships timbers purchased from Chatham Dockyard. The mill now serves as the headquarters of the parish council.
